Call for Posters

Submissions are now closed. You'll be able to see the posters in the Exhibits hall at Loncon 3, along with a range of other displays. The Exhibits Hall will be open to holders of hall passes as well as full members and day admissions.

The 72nd annual World Science Fiction Convention (Loncon 3) will take place in London in August 2014. There will be over 5000 visitors to the Exhibit Hall. Previous conventions have included a strong and varied programme of scientific talks and panel discussions, in which specialists explain recent research or some other aspect of their chosen field to an interested and educated lay audience. A large proportion of science fiction fans are interested in science and mathematics; many have first or higher degrees in a science subject, and many work as professional scientists or researchers in academia or industry.

In 2014, in addition to a wide range of scientific talks and discussions, the committee plan to host an academic poster session in the main Exhibit Hall, and are keen to invite participation from the wider academic community. This is an opportunity for those working in science, mathematics, social sciences and related fields interested in the impact agenda, to explain their recent and ongoing research to an interested, educated lay audience.

Presenters of accepted posters will receive a free pass to the exhibit hall, which can be upgraded to full convention membership at a discounted rate of £50.

Submission and review procedure

Poster proposals, in the form of draft posters or fairly detailed abstracts, should be sent to Dr Nicholas Jackson, Mathematics Institute, University of Warwick (

Revised deadline for submissions: 1 June 2014

Format: up to A0 (119cm x 84cm) or near equivalent, either portrait or landscape. If you wish to bring an exhibit to accompany the poster, please give details with your submission.

Peer review

Submitted posters and abstracts will be subject to a peer review process, and the final selections made on the academic, scientific and expository merit of the individual posters.

The peer review panel includes the following:

Submissions from other disciplines are also welcome.

Prize and sponsorship

Dr Moira Harrison (University of Brighton) has kindly donated £100 for a prize for the best poster, in memory of her father, the science fiction author Harry Harrison.
